Hike 4 Friendship

The Grand Canyon

Sunday, May 26 to
Wednesday, May 29

How it Works

We know new things can be scary. Don’t worry! Team Friendship will be at your side every step of the way. We’ll be more overprotective than a first-time mom at preschool orientation day.

  1. Upon registering, you’ll receive a personal fundraising page (yay!). It’s not your name on a building (yet), but it’s still pretty cool.

  2. Next, you’ll get a training plan from Coach Chaim, our very friendly and very dedicated coach. You’ll also get Coach’s weekly emails with training tips, tricks, and the occasional dad joke (we apologize in advance).

  3. And of course, we won’t leave you out in the cold when it comes to fundraising. We’ve got tried-and-true fundraising tools and methods, which we’ll share with you in our fundraising guide.

And while you’re out there training and fundraising, we’ll be taking care of all this stuff so you don’t have to worry:

  • Flights. Book your flight and we’ll reimburse you up to $275
  • Lodging. We’ve got you covered.
  • Food. From breakfast to snacks to midnight treats, it’s all taken care of. Come hungry!
  • Got a special request? (Totally understandable, we’ve all been there) Submit your RSVP form by May 7 and let us know. We’ll do our very best to make sure you’re at your happiest on the hike trails.

Event Info

So, the hike schedule looks a little bit like this, but just a lot more magnificent in real life:

Day 1 | Sunday, June 7

Land in PHX airport before 12:30 pm. Meet your Hike guides and Team Friendship Team. We soon depart the bustle of Phoenix and, after a beautiful drive through the Sonoran Desert and up onto the high-elevation plateaus of northern Arizona, we arrive at the small town of Grand Canyon Village around 5:00 pm. Here we’ll still have plenty of summertime light to find our campsite, set up our tents, and settle in to camp while the guides prepare a wonderful Kosher dinner. Tonight we enjoy a campfire and dinner under the stars before getting a good night’s sleep in preparation for our adventure tomorrow.

Day 2 | Monday, June 8

EXPLORE THE CANYONS INNER GORGE

After a hearty breakfast, we take a shuttle from camp to the rim of Grand Canyon National Park, getting our first view of one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World! We will split up into smaller hike groups (max of 7-9 participants per group) and transfer to our designated trailheads to begin our hike. Our guides will explain the mileage and difficulty levels so you can choose your level of challenge, but all include wondrous views of the canyon. Options include the famous Bright Angel Trail, South Kaibab Trail, Hermit Trail, and Grandview Trail. Our guides will unfold the distinctive geology as we travel through canyon layers and point unique features such as Native American petroglyphs and historical markers This evening we return to our campsite for our final evening. Dinner under the stars and a feeling of complete awe are your rewards for the challenge of making it here.

HIKING: 6 - 12 miles

Day 3 | Tuesday, June 9

TREK DOWN INTO THE GRAND CANYON

After breakfast we find ourselves splitting up into our same hiking groups venturing off to our respective trailheads to take on a new trail into the canyon. Most of the trails follow ridgelines that offer stunning views up- and down the canyon, starting within a mile from the trailhead. We turn around after a rejuvenating lunch break to head back to the Rim where there will be numerous options for more hiking or simply returning to camp for some relaxation in the cool pines. As evening sets in, we’ll gather for another excellent meal before more campfire time and stargazing take us into the night.

HIKING: 6 - 12 miles

Day 4 | Wednesday, June 10

SUNRISE VIEWING AND CELEBRATORY DINNER

It is hard to believe this is the last day of our journey! For those inclined to rise early, we will make our way into the park for the moving experience of sunrise at the Grand Canyon. Coupled with the beauty of the sun appearing over the desert, the ever-changing light of the sun illuminates the canyon walls from the top down creating a striking contrast. After a delicious breakfast, we pack up camp and depart, stopping along the way for exploration of Desert View Watchtower, another Mary Jane Coulter creation. The views of the canyon and the Colorado River from here, along with the beautiful architecture inspired by the Puebloan Indians, make it a perfect spot for lunch. This afternoon we journey back to Phoenix for a celebratory group dinner before our 7:30 pm drop-off at the Phoenix Airport. Please do not book your flight for a departure earlier than 9:00 pm.

Day 2 | Monday, June 8

TREK INTO THE GRAND CANYON

This exciting Grand Canyon backpac king trip descends into the canyon from the South Rim and winds down the famous Bright Angel Trail to the age-old campground at Indian Gardens. Before settlers came west and ventured into the canyon, Bright Angel Trail was used for centuries by native tribes and was improved by prospectors in the late 19th century and tourists were charged for its use. In 1928, the park service established itself as the overseeing body of Grand Canyon National Park and began maintaining the trail for the public. As you hike along, breathtaking vistas await you around each turn, and temple peaks and buttes rise out of the bottom of the Grand Canyon floor as the trail snakes downwards over three thousand feet.

OVERNIGHT: Bright Angel Campground

ACTIVITY: 9.8 miles

Day 3 | Tuesday, June 9

HIKE TO THE RIM

Get ready for a challenging trek into the heart of the canyon! Today’s ascent is 14 miles and 5,700 feet up to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. On today’s trek we traverse through nearly every biological life zone in North America and can experience drastic temperature and weather changes. As we rise from the Colorado River to the alpine forests, each step takes us through thousands of years in geologic time through ancient oceans, deserts, lakes and swamps. With mind-blowing vistas, fascinating trail design and workmanship, 100-foot tall waterfalls, and green spring-fed oases, the North Kaibab Trail is a national treasure. The end of our hike brings us to North Rim Lodge, nestled on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. We will celebrate our accomplishment with tears of joy knowing only 1% of visitors ever accomplish this hike.

OVERNIGHT: Jacob Lake Inn

ACTIVITY: 14 miles, +/-4,059 feet elevation gain/loss

Day 4 | Wednesday, June 10

THE RETURN TO PHOENIX

This morning we’ll have one final break at the tiny town of Jacob Lake. We will descend from the Kaibab Plateau into Marble Canyon and cross the famous Navajo Bridge before stopping for lunch at Horseshoe Bend. After lunch we will skirt the edge of the colorful Painted Desert and pass by Pine Forests with views of the tallest peaks in Arizona. Our final stretch into the valley we tell our stories in the warm glow of our shared experience and cement the memories in our minds forever. We will head to Phoenix for our celebratory dinner celebrating our hiking accomplishment and the efforts we’ve made in the name of friendship.
